Her family moved into Edmonds, Washington when she was just six years old. father Jack was sociologist who worked in the University of Washington as a vice president for internal communications. He later headed the Washington Biotechnology and Biomedical Association and Karen, her mom Karen was a special education teacher for Seaview Elementary School in Edmonds. Faris shares an elder brother Robert an sociologist, who also serves as a professor in the University of California Davis. As a young girl she was encouraged to pursue acting by her parents. Her first performance as an actor professionally at 9 years of age in the Arthur Miller play Danger: Memory! Seattle Repertory Theater. Following her role as Scout in a To Kill a Mockingbird production at Issaquah Washington, Village Theatre, Faris played Heidi on stage in Our Town and Rebecca as the main persona.
